Born of Tyneside parents, Kate was brought up with her two brothers in the family home on the edge of Sherwood Forest in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Captivated by the magic and mystery of the woodland and its inhabitants, her “over active” imagination (according to her primary school teachers of the 1960s) created a world of make believe which became a retreat for her and the basis of many an imaginative story composed to entertain not only herself, but also the children of her friends when conventional books didn’t quite ‘hit the spot.’ Since leaving school, she has had a continuous and varied career working with children and families through nursing, midwifery, health visiting, counselling and hypnotherapy – the experience from which has fed into her love of writing and offering help for children and young people to develop their resilience, self-esteem and confidence within their true selves.
Kate views writing as a vehicle that transports words into a reader’s or listener’s mind, tantalising the senses and offering themselves for interpretation as the reader or listener pleases. We all hear and process information in our own individual ways. Most commonly, people either prefer to connect their world through what they see and interpret life visually through seeing pictures in their mind, or others who are more in tune with what they hear – thus interpreting their world from their auditory perception.
Through her work and her belief that health and education are inextricably linked, Kate realised the power of metaphor in offering health education information in a creative, subtle and calming (yet lightly humorous) way that takes account of how people interpret their world. Her career of creating trusting relationships between the message giver and the receiver through relaxing words and openness has provided the opportunity to observe and develop the power of healing that words of relaxation offer. Kate is a strong advocate of giving yourself the gift of time to allow your busy, conscious mind to relax and provide your subconscious mind with the opportunity to thoroughly ‘still’ itself. Stillness is one of nature’s most powerful healing forces and solutions and inspiration invariably follow when you emerge from the relaxation that stillness brings. These Relax ‘n Learn Teaching Tales embody that philosophy.
